A Director Identification number (Director ID) is a unique identifier that is given to a director who has verified their identity. The Director ID will be attached to a director permanently, even if they cease to be a director, change their name, or move interstate or overseas. The Government expects the Director ID regime will help prevent illegal phoenixing by ensuring directors can be traced across companies, while also preventing the use of false or fictitious identities. You can apply for your Director ID online, over the phone or paper form.

Here is a step by step guide on how you can apply.

Apply online

Before starting if you do not currently have a myGov ID you will need to set this up at https://www.mygovid.gov.au/set-up. To obtain your Director ID, you are required to have a standard identity strength when applying for your myGov ID. For a standard identity strength, you need to enter your personal details and verify at least two of the following Australian identity documents (your name must match on both):

  • Drivers Licence or Learners Permit
  • Passport (not more than 3 years expired)
  • Birth Certificate
  • Visa (using for your foreign passport)
  • Citizenship Certificate
  • ImmiCard
  • Medicare Card

We recommend that you use a smartphone and a computer/laptop to apply for your myGov ID and Director ID.

You will also be required to answer two questions from the list below (answers must match the ATO's current records) as part of the application. If you are unaware of these details, you need to refer to your last tax return or contact your Ulton Advisor for assistance.

Please note you may select which two you would like to answer:

  • Bank Account that your last ATO refund was paid into (Recommended)
  • Centrelink Payment Summary
  • Dividends Statement
  • Notice of Assessment (Recommended)
  • PAYG Payment Summary (Note: this is different to your Income Statement, and/or your PAYG Instalment Activity Statement. You can find your PAYG Payment Summary on your myGov login, not myGov ID, under the Tax tab).
  • Superannuation Account Details
      1. Go to https://www.abrs.gov.au/director-identification-number
      2. Select 'Apply Now'
      3. Login with your myGov ID
      4. Answer the two questions as per the list above
      5. Confirm you are eligible and you meet the requirements of the Corporations Act 2001
      6. Enter your details
      7. Submit, print and save a PDF of your details (see example). Please note you will not receive an email copy of this number and it will be required for any companies you become a director of in the future. Note: You will receive a copy of your Director ID to your myGov account if you have it linked.
      8. Supply a copy of the PDF to Ulton. Preferably using the MYOB Portal.

Apply over the phone

This option is only available if you have a TFN.

To establish your identity, the ATO will ask you questions based on your tax or superannuation information, including information from third parties and other government departments.

This may include details from ATO letters or notices that have been issued to you, details from a tax return.

The ATO may also ask you to confirm details of identity documents, such as your driver's licence, Medicare card or passport, and to consent to the ATO checking those documents with the issuing authority.

When you have the required documentation ready, phone the following numbers:

  • If you are in Australia 13 62 50
  • If you are overseas, +61 2 6216 3440
  • If you have difficulty speaking or understanding English, you can call the Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS National) on 13 14 50 between 8.00am and 5.00pm (AEST) Monday to Friday. If you are calling from overseas, phone +61 3 9268 8332. The service will then call us with an interpreter, so we can help with your query.
  • If you find it hard hearing or speaking with people who use a phone, the National Relay Service (NRS) can help you. To register with the NRS, or for more information, visit the NRS website https://www.infrastructure.gov.au/media-technology-communications/phone/services-people-with-disability/accesshub/national-relay-service

Note: You will receive a copy of your Director ID to your myGov account if you have it linked. Alternatively, you will receive it via post, 7-10 days after the application is processed. Please note delays with Australia Post may impact this timeframe.
